Vision

Scarborough Museums Trust commissioned Trigger to work on three key projects for Scarborough Art Gallery: the design and installation of exhibition wall graphics, the creation of a marketing campaign to promote the Fears, Foes & Faeries exhibition, and the design of an informative leaflet for the Landscape Revisited exhibition. Each project required a creative approach that would enhance the gallery’s visual identity, engage audiences, and drive attendance.

Solution

For the Fears, Foes & Faeries exhibition, we developed a bold and immersive exhibition design. The exhibition, part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad’s ‘Precious Cargo: Stories of the World’, showcased a historic collection of charms and amulets. We structured the exhibition space into five themed areas—Safety at Sea, Birds and Beasts, Health, Faeries, and Witchcraft – each featuring bespoke wall graphics tailored to its theme. Alongside these visual elements, we designed and built custom display cabinets to securely house artifacts while ensuring accessibility for visitors. The experience was further enhanced by interactive digital elements, including three interactive display units featuring games developed in collaboration with students from the University of Hull.

To support the exhibition’s promotional campaign, we created a visually striking marketing campaign that included press advertising, posters, banners, beer mats, and an eight-metre-wide city centre banner. The concept for the campaign was built around individual, unusual artifacts from the exhibition, paired with intriguing headlines and explanatory text to generate curiosity and encourage attendance. The marketing materials maintained a consistent visual identity, ensuring a seamless connection between promotional content and the in-gallery experience.

Alongside these projects, Scarborough Museums Trust also required a leaflet design to promote the Landscape Revisited exhibition. This exhibition explored the tradition, context, and future of landscape through photography and paintings. We developed an innovative, multi-purpose folding leaflet, designed to serve as both an informational guide and an eye-catching promotional poster. The front side detailed exhibition timings and events, while the reverse featured a striking image from the artist, ensuring the piece was both practical and visually appealing. Additionally, we designed a branded sleeve that transformed the leaflet into a formal invitation for the exhibition preview, which could be easily mailed to guests.

Results

The Fears, Foes & Faeries exhibition proved to be an enormous success, running for six months, making it the longest-running exhibition in the gallery’s history. The immersive wall graphics transformed the exhibition space, creating a visually striking and educational environment that was accessible and engaging for visitors of all ages. The marketing campaign made a significant impact across Scarborough, effectively raising awareness and increasing visitor numbers. The Landscape Revisited leaflet proved to be a cost-effective and versatile marketing tool, successfully promoting the exhibition while also serving as a keepsake for visitors.
